You step onto the balcony and notice a small grey umbrella-shaped nest tucked under the ledge, with a handful of long-legged wasps walking over it. The first hour after you spot a nest matters. What you do, and what you avoid, decides whether it stays a minor nuisance or becomes a sting.
This guide is for Dubai residents who find a paper wasp nest on a balcony, a villa eave, a garden shed or a pergola. It covers how to recognise one, what to do straight away and when to call a professional.
Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests from chewed plant fibre. You can see the hexagonal cells from below, and the nest hangs from a single short stalk. Early nests are often only the size of a coin, and mature nests can reach the size of a hand. The wasps are slim, about 20 mm long, with long dangling back legs when they fly.
A single nest in autumn can look harmless, but the colony grows through the warm months, and Dubai's long warm season gives it plenty of time. Spotting it when it is small makes removal simpler and lowers the chance of a sting for everyone at home. Check the underside of ledges, shutters, outdoor lights and the corners of pergolas whenever you tidy the balcony.
Paper wasps look for sheltered, dry spots out of the wind. Balcony ledges, window frames, patio roofs, pergolas, garden lights and the underside of villa eaves suit them well. Water from plant irrigation and pet bowls gives them a nearby drink, and caterpillars and insects in gardens give them food.
The nest and the insect together tell you what you have.
| What to check | Paper wasp | Honey bee | Oriental hornet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest | Open umbrella of cells, no cover | Wax comb in a hidden cavity | Enclosed paper nest, often underground or in walls |
| Body | Slim, long dangling legs | Furry, rounder | Larger, brown with a yellow stripe |
| Behaviour | Defends the nest, calm away from it | Stays on flowers, swarms rarely | Active in the heat of the day |
| Action | Keep away and call a professional | Do not disturb, call a bee specialist | Keep away and call a professional |
If you are unsure which insect it is, treat it as a stinging nest and keep clear.
Wasps are less active in the evening and early morning, which is when professionals often prefer to work.
A disturbed nest can release many wasps at once, and a fall from a ladder adds a second risk. Stings are painful, and for people with an allergy they can be serious, so seek medical help if someone has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or feels faint after a sting.
Removing a nest does not remove the attraction. Wasps often return to the same sheltered spot the next season. Once the nest is removed, ask for the area to be checked, keep water sources tidy, and trim vegetation that touches ledges and eaves. Regular checks of balcony corners and eaves in spring catch small nests early, when they hold only a few wasps.
A Dubai Municipality certified team can identify the insect, remove the nest safely and check for others. Santera offers a complimentary inspection and a 30-day warranty with follow-up support. Learn more on our Wasps and Hornets pest library page.
They sting mainly to defend the nest. A sting is painful and can be serious for people with an allergy, so keep away.
A nest in use will stay occupied through the warm season, so waiting is not a reliable plan.
It is safer not to. Even a small nest can contain several defending wasps, and a professional can remove it safely.
