You open a bag of basmati rice and find tiny dark beetles moving through the grains, or a small moth flutters out of the flour cupboard. In a Dubai apartment, this is one of the most common kitchen pest complaints. Warm indoor temperatures all year, bulk buying of rice, flour, lentils and spices, and long storage in cupboards give weevils, flour beetles and pantry moths ideal conditions.
Most infestations do not start in your kitchen. They arrive as eggs inside packaged food, then hatch once the product sits in a warm cupboard. Open bags, torn packets and bulk sacks left on the floor make it easy for them to spread from one product to the next.
Dubai households also tend to stock up. Bulk sacks of rice and flour, extra supplies bought ahead of Ramadan and big family-size packs can sit untouched for weeks, which gives a hidden infestation time to grow. In summer, kitchens that are warm and humid between air-conditioning cycles speed up their breeding even more.

The three pests below cause most pantry problems in Dubai homes. Knowing which one you have tells you where to look.
| Sign | Rice weevil | Flour beetle | Pantry moth |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | Small dark beetle with a long snout, 2-3 mm | Reddish-brown flat beetle, 3-4 mm | Small moth flying near cupboards, with larvae and webbing in food |
| Favourite foods | Rice, wheat, pasta, lentils | Flour, cereal, spices, dried fruit | Nuts, dried fruit, grains, pet food |
| Tell-tale sign | Holes in grains, beetles in the bag | Musty smell, clumped flour | Silky webbing in corners of packets |
Whichever pest it is, the approach is the same: find the source, remove it and stop the next batch getting in.
Check rice, flour, pasta, cereal, lentils, spices, dried fruit, nuts and pet food. Look for:
Pantry pests hide at every stage of their life. In the warmth of a Dubai kitchen, eggs hatch in about 5 days. The larvae then feed inside the grain or flour for about 3 weeks, out of sight, before they become adults that lay new eggs. That is why a pantry that looks clear can show new beetles a few weeks later.
It also explains why throwing out only the bag you can see sometimes leaves eggs in the packet next to it, in the cupboard corners or in the crevices of shelves.
Avoid the temptation to simply move the packets to another cupboard. If eggs are already in the food, the problem moves with it. Keep a note of the date you cleared the pantry, and check again after about 3 weeks, in case anything missed has hatched.
If the pests keep returning, or you find them in several cupboards, in a storeroom or across a restaurant or shop kitchen, the source is probably hidden. Santera, Dubai Municipality certified (License 1595993), inspects the affected areas, identifies the pest and plans targeted treatment, with a 30-day warranty with follow-up support. Infested food is best thrown away. The insects, their droppings and webbing spoil the product, so do not keep or eat anything you have found them in.
Most arrive as eggs already inside rice, flour, pasta, spices or pet food bought from a shop or warehouse, then hatch in the warm conditions of a Dubai kitchen.
Storing new rice and flour in sealed containers, and in the fridge where space allows, slows activity. It does not replace finding and removing the source.
