You step onto the balcony in the evening and within a minute you are swatting at your ankles. Mosquitoes in a Dubai home are not only a problem of the wet season, because the places they breed in are the small, ordinary ones: a plant saucer, a drip tray, a blocked drain. This guide shows where they breed around a Dubai apartment or villa, what to do this week, and when it is time to bring in a professional.
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed, and a Dubai home has more of it than most residents expect. Gardens and balcony plants are watered every day, air conditioners drip, pools and fountains sit idle when a family travels, and a drain that does not empty keeps a puddle for days. The adults you see biting are only the last stage. The next generation is already growing in water close to your door.
That is why swatting or leaving the balcony door closed only helps for an evening. As long as the water is there, new mosquitoes keep appearing.
Walk around your home and look for anything that holds water. The table lists the usual places and the quick fix for each one.
| Where | What collects water | Weekly fix |
|---|---|---|
| Balcony | Plant saucers, a tray under a pot, a bucket or toy left out | Tip out the saucers and turn buckets over |
| Villa garden | Planter bases, a blocked gutter, a wheelbarrow, a drain cover | Clear the gutter and drain, and keep planters draining |
| Pool and terrace | A pool cover that holds a puddle, a fountain left idle | Pump the cover dry and run or empty the fountain |
| Inside the home | The air conditioning drip tray, a pet bowl, a vase of cut flowers | Empty and rinse them, and check the drain pipe outlet |
Even a small saucer or a bottle cap of water can be enough, so check the small containers first, not only the big ones.
In warm weather the whole cycle moves quickly. Eggs hatch in about 2 days. The larvae, which wriggle just under the water surface, feed for about 5 days. The pupae then take about 2 days before an adult mosquito flies out. That is roughly 9 days from egg to adult, and it happens in a space as small as a plant saucer.
Because the cycle is shorter than two weeks, emptying and scrubbing the water once a week breaks it before the adults emerge. Scrubbing matters, because the eggs stick to the sides of the container and can survive a quick rinse.

You do not need special equipment. A single weekly round, at the same time each week, is what keeps numbers down. Do these steps in order:
Tipping out one saucer takes seconds. Doing it every week is what removes the breeding site.

Once the water outside is under control, make it harder for the mosquitoes that remain to get in:
Killing the adult mosquitoes you can see does not remove the water they came from, so a new group arrives within days. A lasting result comes from finding the breeding sites, dealing with them, and treating the areas where adults rest, such as shaded plants, walls and balcony corners. A professional visit also spots the sources residents often miss, such as a blocked drain under a paving stone or a flat roof that holds water after cleaning.
Call a professional if any of these are true:
Santera is Dubai Municipality certified (License 1595993). Our inspectors look for the breeding sites and the resting areas, not only the adults. Read more about the pest on our Mosquitoes page in the Pest Library.
Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to breed. Plant saucers, air conditioning drip trays, drains and pool covers can hold enough, even when the weather outside is dry.
Yes. A saucer, a bottle cap or a blocked drain can hold enough water for eggs to hatch, which is why a weekly check of every small container matters.
For most people a bite is itchy and nothing more. If a bite swells badly or you feel unwell afterwards, speak to a doctor.
Call if mosquitoes keep appearing after you have emptied the water you can find, if you cannot find the source, or if the problem is in a shared area such as a communal garden or a flat roof.
