You wave a fly away from the kitchen counter, and an hour later there is another one. In a Dubai apartment that runs air conditioning all year, flies do not stop in winter, and the fix depends on which fly you actually have. A house fly and a drain fly look different, breed in different places and need different action.
This guide helps residents of Dubai apartments identify the fly, find where it is breeding and decide when it is time to call a professional.
Warm weather, sealed buildings and shared waste chutes give flies steady food and shelter. Bin rooms, balcony drains and kitchen sinks stay damp or smelly in every month of the year. A single fly indoors is usually a visitor. A steady stream of flies usually means something inside the home or building is feeding a breeding site.
Check the fly's size, its shape and where it rests. The table below sets the two side by side.
| What to check | House fly | Drain fly |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 6 to 7 mm, grey body | 2 to 3 mm, small and moth-like |
| Wings | Clear, held flat over the body | Fuzzy, held roof-like over the body |
| Where you see it | Food, bins, windows, countertops | Bathroom walls, sinks, shower drains, near floor drains |
| How it flies | Fast and strong | Short, weak hops, often near the wall |
| Breeding site | Rubbish, food waste, pet waste | Film of slime inside drains and pipes |
If the flies are about 6 to 7 mm and chase around the kitchen, think house fly. If they are 2 to 3 mm and cling to the bathroom wall, think drain fly.
House flies lay eggs in rotting food and waste. Look at these places first:
Because flies move between flats, a problem in the building bin room can show up on several floors at once. Tell your building management if the source is outside your unit.
Drain flies do not feed on food waste. They breed in the film of organic slime that builds up inside drains and pipes. Bathrooms and kitchens with slow or little-used drains are the usual places. A guest bathroom that is rarely used or a floor drain that never gets water can produce them.
Pouring boiling water down a drain gives short relief but does not remove the slime. Cleaning the drain walls with a brush and running water regularly does more. If a drain smells or drains slowly, the problem may sit deeper in the pipe, which is a plumbing matter for your building maintenance team.
Give these steps one full week. If you are still seeing flies each day, the source is probably hidden in the walls, in the drain line or in shared building spaces.
Spraying adult flies kills the ones you can see, but the eggs and larvae are in the waste or the drain slime. New flies emerge within days. A house fly can go from egg to adult in roughly a week in warm conditions, so a source left in place keeps producing. Finding and removing the breeding site is what ends the cycle.
A Dubai Municipality certified team can trace the source, treat the affected areas and advise on prevention. Santera offers a complimentary inspection and a 30-day warranty with follow-up support. Learn more about fly biology on our Flies pest library page.
Tiny moth-like flies in a bathroom are usually drain flies breeding in slime inside a drain. Scrub the drain and run water regularly.
House flies land on waste and then on food, so they can spread germs. Keep food covered and bins closed.
Flies usually enter through open doors, balcony doors and gaps, not through the AC itself. Fine mesh on openings helps.
If you removed the breeding site, numbers usually fall within about a week.
