You switch on the kitchen light at night and something dark darts under the cabinet. Before you decide what to do, it helps to know which cockroach you are dealing with. In Dubai apartments, two kinds show up most: the small German cockroach and the large American cockroach. They live in different places, and the action that suits one does not always suit the other.
This guide shows how to tell them apart, where each one hides and when it is time to call a professional.
Dubai buildings are warm all year and many have shared pipes, risers and bin rooms. Cockroaches follow warmth, moisture and food. A roach seen in one flat can come from another, so the whole building matters, not just your kitchen.
That is why the same pest keeps returning to flats that are cleaned well. Dubai kitchens are often compact, with appliances close to walls and pipes, and that gives German cockroaches many warm, dark gaps. Understanding the species is the first step to stopping the cycle.
Size is the quickest clue. The table below sets the two side by side.
| What to check | German cockroach | American cockroach |
|---|---|---|
| Size | About 15 mm, light brown | 35 to 40 mm, reddish brown |
| Markings | Two dark stripes behind the head | Pale yellow band behind the head |
| Where you see it | Kitchen, behind the fridge, under the sink, bathroom cabinets | Drains, bin rooms, basements, parking areas, damp utility spaces |
| Behaviour | Stays close to food and water, runs when lights come on | Can fly short distances in warm weather, often enters from drains or corridors |
| What it tells you | A breeding group is inside your home | It may be coming in from the building or drains |
A roach of about 15 mm in the kitchen is likely German. A roach of 35 to 40 mm near a drain is likely American.
German cockroaches stay within a few metres of food and water. Check these places with a torch after dark:
Seeing a German cockroach in daylight can mean the group is large, because they prefer to hide when numbers are small.
American cockroaches usually live in drains, bin rooms and service shafts and wander into flats looking for water. A single large roach in the bathroom is often a drain visitor. Check that floor drains hold water and that gaps around pipes are sealed. If you see them repeatedly, tell your building management, as the source is often shared pipework.
The signs a cockroach leaves can say more than the roach itself. Small wingless cockroaches under 5 mm are nymphs, and finding them means the group is breeding in or near your home. Tiny dark specks like ground pepper in cabinet corners are German cockroach droppings. A brown capsule about 8 mm long near the fridge or under the sink is an egg case, and one case can hold many eggs.
Cockroaches also leave a musty, oily smell where numbers are high. If you notice that smell in a closed cabinet, treat it as a sign of an established group rather than a one-off visitor.
These steps remove food and water, which cockroaches need. They help, but they rarely clear a German cockroach group on their own.
Cockroaches hide in cracks that surface sprays do not reach, and eggs are protected in cases. A shop-bought spray can scatter them into neighbouring rooms or flats. A professional inspection finds where the group lives and treats those spots, with follow-up visits because new nymphs keep hatching.
A Dubai Municipality certified team can confirm the species, treat the hiding places and advise on prevention. Santera offers a complimentary inspection and a 30-day warranty with follow-up support. Read more on our Cockroaches pest library page.
German cockroaches are the one most often found breeding inside kitchens. American cockroaches are more often drain and building visitors.
No. They are drawn to warmth, water and food crumbs, and can arrive from shared pipes or neighbouring units.
American cockroaches can fly short distances in warm weather. German cockroaches rarely do.
If you see them in daylight or find nymphs, call early, because numbers grow quickly.
