Your dog scratches at the same spot, your ankles itch after sitting on the majlis cushions and you notice tiny dark specks on the pet bed. In a Dubai villa with pets, the flea you see is only a small part of a problem that is mostly hidden in the house.
This guide is for Dubai villa owners with cats or dogs who suspect fleas. It covers where fleas hide, what to do this week, what to leave alone and when to bring in a professional.
Villas are air-conditioned year round, with rugs, carpets, floor cushions and pet beds that stay warm and undisturbed. Pets that go out into the garden or mix with other animals can pick fleas up and carry them indoors. Adult fleas live on the pet, but eggs fall off into the places where the pet rests.
Only a small share of fleas are adults on the pet. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in the home, which is why treating the pet alone rarely solves it.
Look at both the pet and the home.
Fleas favour warm, quiet places close to the pet. Use this table to check the likely spots.
| Place | What lives there | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pet bed and blankets | Eggs, larvae and dirt | Wash hot and dry fully |
| Carpets and rugs | Larvae and pupae deep in the fibres | Vacuum daily and empty outside |
| Majlis cushions and sofas | Eggs and larvae in the seams | Vacuum seams and wash covers |
| Bedrooms | Fleas that have moved from the pet | Wash bedding and vacuum floors |
| Garden shade and entrances | Fleas dropped by pets outdoors | Keep shaded areas tidy |
Pupae can wait for weeks before they emerge, so you may see new fleas for a while even after you start cleaning.
Consistency matters more than intensity. A daily routine for a few weeks breaks the cycle better than one deep clean.
Products made for one animal can harm another, so speak to your vet before using anything on the pet.
Fleas do not stay where they are first found. A pet that sleeps on a sofa in the evening and on a bed at night spreads eggs to every spot it rests. In a villa with several rooms, a pet that moves between a majlis, a bedroom and a covered patio can leave eggs in each of them within a day or two. That is why a flea problem that starts in one pet bed often shows up as bites in a different room.
Visitors can add to it. A friend's dog, a stay at a pet boarding facility or a walk in a park can bring new fleas into a home that was clear, so it helps to check the pet after any trip out.
Expect it to take several weeks rather than a few days. Pupae sit in a protective cocoon and only emerge when they sense warmth and movement, so new adults keep appearing after the first clean-up. Each time you vacuum, the vibration can even prompt more to emerge, which is useful because they then come out where you can deal with them. Stay with the routine until you have gone a full week or more without seeing a flea or a new bite.

Most of a flea population is in the home as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on the pet. Treat the pet as your vet advises and clean the places it rests.
Yes. Indoor temperatures suit fleas, and carpets, rugs and soft furnishings give them places to hide.
