Few sights make a resident jump like a long-legged house centipede darting across a bathroom floor. These fast, many-legged creatures are a common worry in Dubai villas and apartments, especially ground-floor units, older buildings and homes with damp utility areas. The big question is always the same: are they dangerous?
House centipedes are not aggressive towards people and they prefer to flee rather than fight. A bite is rare and usually only happens if the centipede is trapped or handled. When it does occur, it is typically described as a brief, mild pain with some redness, similar to other minor insect bites. Individual reactions vary, so anyone who develops a spreading rash, swelling or other worrying symptoms should seek medical advice.
They do not damage structures, contaminate food in the way some pests do, or live in colonies inside walls. The real concern is what their presence tells you about your home.

House centipedes hunt other small insects. If you are seeing them regularly, there is usually a source of prey nearby, such as drain flies, silverfish, small cockroaches or other crawling insects. They also favour humid, sheltered areas. In Dubai, bathrooms, laundry rooms, floor drains, balcony drainage points and the spaces under sinks create exactly this combination, even in a very dry climate, because air conditioning produces condensation and plumbing creates constant damp spots.
Look in bathrooms and shower trays, floor drains, laundry rooms and under kitchen sinks. They also use gaps around pipes, door thresholds and balcony door tracks as entry points, and rest in storage cupboards, behind appliances, in garage corners and under boxes left on the floor. Ground-floor villas with gardens often see more activity because irrigation and landscaping add moisture and insects close to the building.

Ground-floor villas with gardens, irrigation lines and outdoor drains often see centipedes entering from outside, especially after watering or on humid nights. Apartments tend to see them through shared pipe risers, bathroom extraction ducts and service shafts, which means a neighbour's moisture or pest problem can show up in your unit. Older buildings with ageing plumbing and worn sealant around fittings give them more routes in, while newer buildings are not immune because condensation from air conditioning units creates damp pockets of its own. Knowing which pattern fits your home helps you decide where to look first and what to fix.
Seasonality matters too. Activity can rise during humid months and after any water leak or pipe repair, because moisture draws in the small insects that centipedes hunt. If you notice a sudden increase, ask whether anything changed recently, such as a plumbing job, new planting near the building or a period when the home was left unoccupied.
Because the centipede is a symptom, focus on removing what attracts it. Fix leaking taps and slow drains, run extraction fans after showers and dry shower trays. Clear standing water from balcony drains and plant trays. Seal gaps around pipe collars, fit door sweeps and check the tracks of balcony doors. Reduce clutter on floors in storage areas so there are fewer hiding spots.
Removing a single centipede does nothing about the insects it was feeding on or the moisture drawing them in. If sightings continue, an inspection can trace the prey source and entry routes. A treatment plan then targets the pests and the conditions that support them, rather than just the one you happened to see.

Call in help if you see centipedes repeatedly, notice other pests such as drain flies or silverfish, or have an ongoing damp problem you cannot trace. Santera, Dubai Municipality certified (License 1595993), inspects the affected areas, identifies what is attracting the activity and applies a targeted plan with a 30-day warranty and follow-up support. See our centipedes and millipedes pest library page for more detail.
They are not aggressive and bites are rare. A bite is typically mild, but if a child or pet shows an unusual reaction, seek medical or veterinary advice.
Bathrooms offer humidity, shelter and small insects to feed on, so they are a common place for sightings.
Not necessarily, but regular sightings suggest a prey or moisture source worth investigating.
They can use drains and pipe gaps as routes, which is why sealing gaps and keeping floor drains in good order helps.
Santera finds the source behind the sightings. Book your complimentary inspection via WhatsApp, with same-day service available across Dubai.
